Skilled visas

Skilled visas program is for people with special skills and occupations which are required in Australia. There are a number of visas available in this program and most of them require you to pass the points test, which is calculated on your age, English language, qualifications, nominated occupation and recent work experience.

For Skilled visas you will need to satisfy the following basic requirements:

  1. Age - You must be under 45 years of age at the time of application

  2. English language - You will need to demonstrate at least competent English (IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, test score of 6.0 for each of the four test components). For some provisional visas (temporary) the concessional competent English (IELTS test average band score of at least 6.0 for the four test components) may be sufficient.

  3. Qualifications - You must have post secondary qualifications equivalent to Australian Bachelor Degree or higher; diploma or trade qualifications. Your skills must be assessed by the relevant assessing body.

  4. Nominated occupation - You must have an occupation that is listed on the Skilled Occupations List

  5. Recent work experience - You must prove that you have been employed in a SOL occupation for at least 1 year out of the last 2 years immediately before applying. If you have been studying in Australia for 2 years you can be exempt from this requirement if you apply within 6 months from the date of completion of your course.

Students and GSM
The criteria for grant of GSM visas will be continusly changing in response to the changing economic circumstances of Australia. International students should note that any changes to the criteria for the grant of a GSM visa would not affect their Student visa conditions. But students should not make educational choices solely on the basis of hoping to achieve a particular migration outcome, as the GSM program will continue to change and adapt to Australia’s economic needs. We wish you to be aware of this circumstances when deciding for student visas.
